Trentin: “I'm still young inside!”

Matteo Trentin (Tudor Pro Cycling Team): “I won this race 10 years ago and it's finally possible I can actually win a race this year! After the Tour de France, I was feeling really good. Finally, the legs were what they should be. I was a bit unlucky in Hamburg (at ADAC Cyclassics), I got injured and I had to wait again to come back racing, but finally I got it. Actually they (Paul Lapeira and Thibaud Gruel) sneaked away in an actually perfect moment. We were attacking, attacking, attacking, and in the first and only moment of kind of looking at each other, they went. Then we kept like attacking and chasing, attacking and chasing, and at the end we could sneak away. We still had (Stefan) Bissegger as a passenger, so it's not really nice. We really couldn't get closer than 10 seconds, but then we knew like if you really keep them there, it's always the case that people start to look at each other, and if they do, we come back. It happened really in 300 m because like 1.5 km to go, they were 10 seconds and in the last corner we were there. I just wanted to sprint actually. I'm still young inside! The fact that I didn't fight for position, that probably saved me just a little bit, because it was so hard and we pushed so much today that a little energy saved, even if it's nothing, it could make a difference. It's a completely different race now, and I knew that the other times I won it, there was a headwind. So you come to the gravel sector where everybody is kind of more fresh, and today with echelons and side wind and the race was actually super fast. I knew that if the race took this direction I could be much better because then you come to the final where you really need to have like a diesel engine, and you need to read the race pretty well.”
